He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, and filled the vacancy left by Richard R. Lyman’s excommunication.

In 1935, Petersen was named managing editor of the church-owned Deseret News, and in 1941, he was named editor.

Petersen worked as a newspaper carrier as a child and also assisted his father in his construction business.

He later attended the University of Utah and served an LDS Church mission in Nova Scotia.

In pursuit of a career, he worked as a reporter for the Deseret News for sixty years, rising to the position of president and chairman of the board.

Petersen published over forty books and numerous pamphlets used in the church’s missionary effort, as well as numerous editorials.
